£1.5m refurbishment for Manchester Airport’s freight terminal

The World Freight Terminal at Manchester Airport has just undergone a £1.5m, eight month long refurbishment to bring the facility into the 21st century.

Although fans of Manchester United may be slightly disappointed to see the iconic red, black and white stripes disappear from the roof of the World Freight Terminal at Manchester Airport, the overhaul of the facilities was well overdue and will be welcomed overall.

Upgrades and renovations

As well as changing the roof colour from black and red to oyster grey in keeping with the airport’s other terminals, the project involved upgrading the site’s insulation, replacing existing roof lights to provide additional natural lighting within the WFT buildings, replacing rainwater pipes and relining the guttering.

The World Freight Terminal at Manchester Airport is a busy place, dealing with cargo aircraft and freight consignments that arrive or depart in the holds of passenger aircraft at Manchester Airport. In 2010 this equated to around 120,000 tonnes – cause for significant wear and tear on the storage and handling facilities.

In a Manchester Airport press release, Jenny Smith, Property Manager, for the Manchester Airport Group voiced her satisfaction with how the project had been handled, saying:
