The China Air Transport Association (CATA) has this week announced that Chinese airlines will refuse to pay the new EU emissions tax.
Airlines and tour operators based outside of the EU have been almost unanimous in their condemnation of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme which was launched at the beginning of the month.
The new law will require carriers flying in and out of EU airports to pay the European Commission a fee as compensation for their greenhouse gas emissions.
The first non-EU country to speak out against the scheme was the US, with several prominent US airlines mounting a legal challenge to the tax shortly before Christmas. The challenge failed and since then Delta Airways has become the first US airline to add a levy to its ticket prices to cover the EU tax - $3 on a one-way ticket.
Now it’s the turn of the Chinese to protest against the new law with Air China, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Air Hainan all opposing the levy and declaring themselves unwilling to pay.
Three of the four Chinese airlines currently fly out of Heathrow according to our Heathrow parking team. And if they do refuse to pay the tax, they could be fined up to 100 euros a tonne for their emissions or simply banned from EU airports in future.
