Dublin Airport Tackles Greenhouse Gases

L4P

Dublin airport is part of a collaborative effort to reduce CO2 emissions in conjunction with another 54 European airports.

52% of European air passenger traffic is now covered by an airport carbon management certification program, of which Dublin Airport is now ‘Airport Carbon’ Accredited.

Dublin Airport Authority has three airports which have been mapped for CO2 emissions and a combined reduction of CO2 of around 3,500 tonnes was recorded at Dublin and Cork airports from 2009 to 2010 – the same amount that is released from 1,100 cars in a full year.

There are four levels of certification to become accredited with the Airport Carbon Management Certification –

  • An independent verification of an airport’s carbon footprint – Mapping
  • The difference in emissions – Reduction
  • The reduction of emissions of other companies on the airport grounds – Optimisation
  • Offsetting the remaining carbon footprint – Neutrality

Both Dublin Airport and Cork Airport have both reduced their carbon footprint and so are Airport Carbon Accredited for Reduction – Shannon Airport is accredited for Mapping.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that around 2% of the world’s CO2 emissions come from the aviation sector - of which figure airports make up to 5% of.

Dublin Airport Parking customers can rest assured that Dublin Airport is keen to tackle its greenhouse gas emissions.
