East Midlands Airport pioneers use of bio-fuel shuttle

L4P

In a six month trial with the UK’s first commercial producer of liquid biomethane - Gasrec - East Midlands Airport will be testing the UK’s first carbon neutral shuttle bus service.

The passenger shuttle will run on a carbon neutral fuel known as LBM which is created by extracting and liquefying harmful greenhouse gases produced by landfill sites and other bio waste products.

The benefits

It’s hoped that the scheme will help to improve the air quality at the airport, reducing CO2emissions and cutting fuel bills. During the trial, the carbon neutral bus will be tested against its traditional diesel counterpart to enable airport operators to assess the pros and cons of introducing the technology on a wider scale.

The broader picture

The trial of the biomethane shuttle is just one in a series of environmentally friendly projects that the airport will be undertaking.Other areas of focus include working to reduce the CO2emissions of other ground operations and looking at alternative energy sources for airport buildings and offices.

All three projects form part of the airport’s bid to go carbon neutral by 2012, something which they are already over half way towards achieving.
