With everyone from BA to our airport car parking team joining the Fair Tax on Flying coalition, the UK Air Passenger Duty (APD) has become increasingly unpopular this spring. Successful low budget airline easyJet has this week launched a fresh attack on the government’s unpopular APD tax. Backed by a host of travel industry names, from tour operators to cheap airport parking brands, easyJet presented the findings of an independent report damning the tax before a gathering of MPs and peers on Wednesday night. It was the first time that easyJet had hosted a political event of this kind - testament to the strength of feeling against APD within the business. Like many of the travel companies within the Fair Tax for Flying coalition, easyJet is calling for the government to review its current levy in the light of the damage the tax is doing to the UK tourism industry. Instead of a ‘per passenger’ duty, they suggest a ‘per plane duty’ - reducing the penalties paid by ordinary travellers and more efficient airlines. The report - commissioned by easyJet and produced by independent research body Frontier Economics - forecasts further bad news for the travel industry if the current APD stays. Its gloomy predictions include a reduction in tourist spending in the UK by £475 million a year and a loss of 77,000 tourism-related jobs.
