EU green tax to hit Heathrow hard

With airlines facing new levies under the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme, research suggests Heathrow Airport may be the unintentional victim of the tax.

New research by the independent think tank Civitas has predicted that new levies applied under the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme will not only hit air passengers, but will also inflict serious damage on Heathrow Airport, putting large numbers of jobs at risk.

It is estimated that the new EU levy, which began at the start of the year, will cost airlines around £1 billion a year, most of which will be passed on to businesses and consumers through higher ticket prices.

Heathrow is thought to be particularly at risk from the tax because of its status as an international travel hub with every flight taking off and landing there subject to the new charges regardless of whether they’re ultimately European-bound or not.

The worry is that Non EU airports such as Zurich, Geneva and Oslo, meanwhile, could quickly begin to be more attractive to airlines as ‘hub’ or connection airports as the EU tax will not apply there.

If airlines choose not to fly to Heathrow and passenger numbers dip as a result, Heathrow parking providers like Looking4Parking stand to lose out too. With this in mind, we’ll be watching further developments closely.
