Final call for Plymouth Airport

L4P

Plymouth Airport will close tonight, 80 years after it first opened.

The airport was officially opened in 1931 by King Edward III but was used for flying in the 1920s.

Flights from the airport stopped in July after bosses announced that it was no longer making a profit.

Plans are already being put together to build a new airport on the site with £30million being sought for development.

Local businesspeople are campaigning to save the airport as the plans would see Plymouth connected to over 30 international airports, including Paris and Amsterdam.

The development is based on London City Airport and could allow up to one million passengers through its doors.

Plymouth residents are unlikely to benefit from this is the near future though, as the new airport is expected to take 10 years to build, should it get the go ahead.
