Heathrow Airport Suffers due to Snow

Heathrow Airport has come under heavy criticism for cancelling hundreds of flights due to the recent snow and bad weather.

Recent snow fall has left many passengers struggling after being stranded due to Heathrow Airport closing down many flights.

Some 40 flights were cancelled on Monday (6th Feb 2012) which was attributed to freezing fog, poor visibility and disruptions from the previous snow fall over the last week. Passengers criticised BAA for having closed down over 500 flights following 10cm of snow fall on Saturday last week.

Flights were diverted to places such as Glasgow and Cardiff and 400 passengers were stranded at Shannon from a transatlantic flight. Transport Secretary Justine Greening said: “There may be some cancellation and reshuffling as a result of yesterday’s disruption.” referring to last Sunday’s snow.

Heathrow Airport spent almost £30million after criticism in December 2010 after heavy snowfall almost completely shut down the Airport.

753 flights operated from the Airport on Sunday - only 58% of its usual capacity of 1,300. BAA said about its snow plan that it had "worked far better than in previous years".

Heathrow Airport parking services suffered minimal disruption over the snowy spell apart from having to readjust a few bookings and deal with flight delays/alterations and a few inconvenienced and travel weiry passengers!
