High winds affecting flights at Scottish airports UPDATED

Scottish flights delayed or cancelled

Scotland’s red alert weather warning means many flights in and out of Scottish airports today will be severely delayed or cancelled.

The weather warning, issued this morning by the Met Office, is due to 80mph winds and the possibility of sleet and snow.

Gale force winds have already hit the Western Isles and forecasters predict this will continue throughout the day, extending across areas of Scotland.

Schools have been closed across west, central and southern Scotland and transport will be severely affected. Many bridges across the country have been closed after the Met Office said there was a significant risk of structural damage and trains will be limited to 50mph.

Glasgow Airport said it will be facing “delays and cancellations throughout the day” and other Scottish airports are expected to follow suit with these announcements.

An Edinburgh Airport spokesman said: “Edinburgh Airport is experiencing high winds that are making operations unsafe. This has meant severe disruption to services including lengthy delays and cancellations. In addition, many of the road and rail routes to the airport are also severely affected.

“Passengers should check with their airlines before travelling to the airport and should not travel unless absolutely necessary.”

If you’re concerned about your flight, visit your airline’s website for information, as they will be posting updates throughout the day.
