What’s being described as the world’s first mobile airport terminal was unveiled in Geneva this week by Austrian company TMT Management GmbH.The ‘pop-up’ terminal features the same cutting edge facilities as you’d expect to find in any modern terminal building, including check-in desks, computers, passenger facilities and more – only this time in a structure that can be put together in less than a week.According to its creators, the facility can process between 180 and 200 passengers within two hours – the kind of load that a medium-sized airliner would typically carry.Ideal for busy airportsThe idea behind the project is to provide busy airports with extra capacity on an adhoc basis, thereby cutting queues and reducing congestion. It’s also thought that the facility could be useful during airport expansion or renovation works.“The terminal can be used not only to handle surges of passengers, but also to back up airports hit by natural disasters and when major sports events are held in a catchment area”, Thomas Melcher - Managing Director of TMT - explained at this week’s launch.Robert Deillon, the Managing Director of Geneva Airport, added that the terminal would be employed both during the winter months and during future construction work, when other parts of the airport might need to be relieved. “We have been looking for something like this for years”, he went on to add.
