ABTA steps up Fair Tax on Flying campaign

L4P

This week ABTA has put its opposition to APD back in the media spotlight by taking the Fair Tax on Flying campaign to Northern Ireland.

The Fair Tax on Flying campaign was launched to protest against further government rises in Air Passenger Duty (APD), and is back in the press this week as campaign leaders ABTA take a delegation to Northern Ireland.

Belfast was chosen as the location for further protest as - according to opponents of the tax - the region stands to lose several international flight links and millions of pounds in tourist revenue unless APD is reformed.

Currently Northern Irish passengers can travel to the Irish Republic to fly, thereby avoiding UK APD. This trend is thought to be responsible for a 26% growth in passenger numbers from Dublin while figures from Belfast have remained static during the same period – a worrying development for Belfast airport, as well as airlines and tour operators.

Pressure from the industry and several independent studies demonstrating the current APD structure to be potentially damaging to the UK tourist industry has led the government to conduct a review of the policy.

This review is due to be completed by the end of this week, and it’s hoped that it will lead to wholesale reforms.
