As part of a major new research project at Bangor University, some of the UK’s leading scientists are working on an explosives detector which could soon be used at all major airports.According to the 26-strong team working on the project, the new sensor will be capable of detecting airborne narcotics and chemical and biological agents as well as explosives once it’s finished. When the lab stage is complete, the device will go into live testing at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, where its effectiveness in real-life scenarios will be assessed. As well as the explosives sensor itself, the project is also developing a system capable of decontaminating air which has been polluted with chemical or biological agents -ideal,it’s thought, for countering terrorist attacks.Project spokesperson Dr Chris Gwenin from Bangor University’s School of Chemistry admits that more work needs to be done in this field in order to keep up with the technologies being used by terrorists, “the recent international security alerts show a high level of innovation in the creation of terrorist explosive devices," he said."With the use of commercial explosives such as PETN being found in such devices it is clear that detection technology is urgently needed.”
