According to the owners of Southend Airport - the Stobart Group - the small Essex airport is set to begin running 70 easyJet flights a week from early next year. Thanks to its handy location less than an hour's travel from central London, the newly expanded airport has the potential to attract thousands of customers who want to use Heathrow Airport parking away from London. This may help to ease congestion and open up much-needed additional capacity for the South East. The new easyJet routes from Southend will serve traditional European destinations such as Alicante, Barcelona, Ibiza, Malaga and Majorca, Belfast, Amsterdam and Faro. As well as providing an alternative for Heathrow passengers, it will also take some of the pressure off Stansted with some of the new routes are being moved directly from there. To help service its rapid expansion, Southend is undergoing a redevelopment with a brand new £3m control tower opening this month and an extension to its current runway planned for the near future.
