A Weekend in Amsterdam

This most human of cities is at its most appealing right now, without the crowds that begin at Easter and stay through the summer. If you are fancying a trip away for the weekend there is something for everyone. The things you can do range from visiting to museums or even having a “relaxing” time in a coffee shop or if you are feeling extra adventurous you could visit the red light district for a “cultural experience”.

Amsterdam has a long and eventful history. The origins of the city lie in the 13th century, when fisherman living along the banks of the River Amstel built a bridge across the waterway near the IJ, then a large saltwater inlet. Wooden doors on the bridge served as a dam; these protected the town from the IJ, which often flooded the early settlement. The mouth of the river Amstel, where the Damrak now is, formed a natural harbour, which became important for trade.

Beside the typical stereotypes of Amsterdam it is actually a beautiful city that offers a lot; the flower market is probably the most famous flower market in the world being globally renowned. Another Idea of a place to explore is the House of Bols is the oldest distillery in the world being there since 1575. The House of Bols has great reviews and at 11 euros is also a cheap way to have a very enjoyable day.

You could fly from one of 19 UK airports to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, 10 miles south-west of the city centre. Trains from here to Centraal station which would take about 20 minutes; €3.70 one-way, €6.30 return. On getting to the Airport in the UK a good idea would be to take advantage of Cheap Airport Parking through us. We could save you a large amount on Airport Parking. Prices from as little as £10 for a weekend parking could save you a bundle rather than getting a taxi to the airport or another form of transport.
