British Airways has this week revealed plans to implement a new £12 fuel surcharge on all long-haul flights from Tuesday.
The additional charges will apply to both the outward and return legs of a long-haul trip, costing £12 each way in economy class and £24 per return trip. The charges for business and first class passengers meanwhile, will be £17.
The increase will take the total surcharges on long-haul flights which last more than nine hours to £88 and on shorter flights to £75 - something which may encourage passengers to holiday nearer home in future.
There are currently no plans to increase the surcharge on short-haul services, which is good news for many business and leisure and travellers around the UK. In a statement about the plans, BA attributed the price hike to the spiralling cost of fuel, saying:
“The move reflects a 14% rise in the spot price of jet fuel since our last fuel surcharge increase in December.”
