With major airlines already exploring how new technology could help them improve their in-flight entertainment, we look at what passengers can expect on the flights of the future.
With so many of us owning tablets, smartphones and laptops, and the quality on-board Wi-Fi improving steadily, many airlines are looking at ways to bring the two things together to revolutionise their in-flight entertainment services.
Lufthansa and Virgin America are among the first carriers to start experimenting. Both have developed a state of the art system which delivers a choice of films, programmes, games and other entertainment directly to a passenger’s device via on-board Wi-Fi.
Other airlines meanwhile are looking at the cost of installing USB ports beside every seat to allow passengers to connect their phones, laptops or tablets directly to the plane’s entertainment system.
Providing in-flight entertainment in this way stands to offer airlines huge cost savings. Not only can they dispense with the need to install screens and other hardware of their own, providing content via the internet will allow them to offer unlimited choice and easily updatable selections that can be controlled and managed centrally.
Airlines are also looking at ways to allow passengers to order and pay for food, drinks and other shopping during the flight via their devices. It’s hoped that making it quicker and easier for us to browse and buy on-board will help boost sales.
