Protestors target passengers at some of the UK’s biggest airports to make their displeasure heard at proposed increases from next April on Air Passenger Duty (APD).
The Hands off our holiday campaign started in earnest today, targeting passengers and airport parking customers at some of the UK’s biggest airports to express displeasure at proposed increases in Air Passenger Duty (APD) from next April.
The UK has the highest flight tax in the world and we at Looking4parking airport parking are backing the campaign wholeheartedly as the Chancellor plans to increase APD tax by double the rate of inflation.
APD has increased almost year on year with a 140% increase on short haul flights and a massive 325% on long haul flights in less than five years. This has added an enormous strain on an average family of four taking a holiday abroad.
Chancellor George Osbourne froze APD in the Budget in March, however a substantial increase in March to compensate for this is planned. The British holiday maker is finding it increasingly more and more difficult to find cost effective holidays at home or abroad due to both increased fuel prices and APD .
The campaign has the backing of the Airport Operators Association (AOA), the Board of Airline Representatives here in the UK (BAR-UK) and the British Air Transport Association (BATA) and all are urging people to email their MP via the Hands Off Our Holiday website.
BAR-UK’s chief executive Mike Carrivick has voice his opinion stating that “when the UK already has the highest rate of flight tax in the world, why should families be discriminated against for wanting to fly on a break?”
BATA’s chief executive Simon Buck also added his view and said “ The government takes nearly £3 billion in tax from passengers - more than the tax on the banking industry. It should drop the hikes planned next year.”
