Weird and wonderful airport hotels

Spending the night before an early flight at an airport hotel is a great idea. Not only can you enjoy a few extra hours snooze in the morning, there are all kinds of airport hotels to choose from - from the sublime to the seriously quirky.

1. Radisson Blu - Zurich Airport
This hotel not only offers elite access to Zurich Airport’s departure terminal, the restaurant and bar also feature a strange and striking ‘wine tower’ where the wine ‘angels’ perform aerial acrobatics to retrieve bottles of wine and deliver them to customers’ tables.

2. CitizenM - Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
A thoroughly hip, minimalist hotel, the CitizenM provides guests with a remote control in their room which can be used to alter the mood lighting, temperature, blinds, music and TV channels. The Wi-Fi here is fast and free too.

3. Holiday Inn - Brussels Airport
Although it looks to be nothing special from the outside, this hotel is packed with quirky contemporary design features once you get inside. Chic retro-styled guest rooms and lobby area, and playful dog sculptures make this airport hotel really stand out from the norm.

4. Yotel - Heathrow and Gatwick Airports
Without doubt one of the most unusual chains of airport hotels in Europe, the Yotel concept is based on Japanese capsule hotels. Each room is essentially a miniature pod or compartment with a bed, micro-bathroom, flat screen TV and laptop stand. Not one for claustrophobic among us!

5. Aloft - Denver and Philadelphia Airports
Aloft hotels are now popping up all over North America and Canada and combine value with quirky, vintage-inspired interior design. Think the best of mid-century modern with modular furniture, an open-plan games room and kooky drinks lounge and you won’t be far wrong.
