What is ATOL?

When you booked your holiday, chances are you’ll have seen the ATOL logo on the website you used or the brochure you flicked through. But what is ATOL? And what does it mean for you?

ATOL stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence and it is a licence issued to a travel agent or tour operator once the Civil Aviation Authority has ensured that the company meets their requirements.

If you book a holiday with a company registered with ATOL then you can be sure that you won’t lose money if your holiday is cancelled and that you won’t be stranded abroad in the event that your travel company goes bust without warning.

This is something that several of our Birmingham Airport parking customers faced last summer when Goldtrail collapsed. Because Goldtrail held a valid ATOL licence, all passengers who had booked holidays were flown home and were eligible for a refund, although the refund process was slow.

Ensuring your travel agent is ATOL registered

Before you book a holiday, make sure your travel agent is ATOL registered. This way you’ll know you’ll be protected in the event of your holiday being cancelled or your tour operator going bust.

Always ask to see an agent’s ATOL number, and if in doubt, check their status via the ATOL database.
