We’ve just read CNN International’s World’s 10 most hated airports and spotted that the UK’s own Heathrow is at number three!
Now, call us patriotic but we don’t think Heathrow is all that bad. We know that the most hated airports are not necessarily the worst but there are many good things about Heathrow that get lost amongst the general hustle and bustle that puts people off the airport.
We want to remind everyone why deep down we all love Heathrow.
It’s the largest single site employer in the UK
In fact, nearly 80,000 people work at Heathrow Airport, and as many as 1 in 10 people who live locally work there. Heathrow has pledged to hire as many people from local area as possible and has schemes helping young people find work at the airport.
Shops and restaurants galore
The biggest complaint about Heathrow seems to be the waiting times. We know it’s not great, but every airport has queues and delays and at Heathrow there’s actually something to do. Better than that – there are nearly 100 shops in the airport, including many luxury brands, duty free.
Fly to 170 destinations
Wherever you want to go in the world you’re well served with Heathrow. The airport has flights to all but one of the top 30 cities in the world by GDP. Used by over 90 airlines across the globe, we can see why it’s such a popular hub.
Love Actually was filmed there
Well alright not the whole film, but the beginning bit with people hugging and being happy to see each other. Surely that just makes the hatred melt away? No? For the more cold-hearted and cynical amongst us read on...
It’s the world’s busiest airport for international passengers
This might not sound like a good thing at first glance but Heathrow airport processes 167,000 travellers a day bringing thousands of people to the UK, and with them, their cash. It also handles £30bn worth of the UK’s exports, more than any other port in the country.
Is it really all that bad?
