Dresden used to be part of the East German internal flight network and was used to fly tourists to both internal destinations as well as international destinations such as Budapest. In 1990, following Germany’s reunification, the airport became Flughafen Dresden GmbH and began modernising and expansion work on the airport. New investment led to the exapnsion of a departure hall in order to make into a new terminal, and to the construction of new runways in order to get rid of the restictions on passenger numbers, cargo weight and fuel capacity.
Many internal routes towards the likes of Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne and Düsseldorf are operated from Dresden Airport, as well as a number of direct flights to international destinations such as Moscow, Corfu, Lanzarote and Barcelona. The first ever airline to operate a flight out of Dresden International was Lufthansa, who is now also represented by via its subsidiaries Eurowings and Germanwings. Other airlines operating routes from this airport include, Air Berlin, Sun Express, Aeroflot, Easyjet, Germania and Swiss.
