The international airport Stuttgart is situated about 12 km south of Stuttgart, between the cities Leinfelden-Echterdingen and Filderstadt. Due to a flight passenger volume of 10.5 million in 2015, this airport is the sixth largest airport in Germany. The airport is in close proximity to the new Trade Fair Stuttgart as well as to the train station ‘Flughafen/Messe’.
Built in 1911, Stuttgart Airport has first been used for the airplane that Ernst Heinkel constructed himself. Later, from 1921, the airport has solely been used for postal flights and eventually, from 1925, by Deutsche Lufthansa for worldwide, civil flights. The airport serves as traffic crossroad for low cost airlines, such as Easyjet, Ryanair, Eurowings and Flybe. Also well-established airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, KLM amongst many others have expanded their route network at Stuttgart Airport. Popular destinations from Stuttgart Airport include international travel destinations such as London, Venice, Budapest, Zurich and Lisbon; a transatlantic flight to Atlanta; as well as the German metropolises Dresden, Hamburg, Berlin (Tegel), Hanover and Munich.
Terminals 1, 1 West, 2, 3 and 4 are available to flight passengers. The terminals T1, T3 and T4 have their own gates available, while T1 West and T2 can only be used for check-ins. Terminal 1 was built in a structure that allows short walks to the gates and facilitates orientation. This terminal is connected to the city train in Stuttgart, accommodates a baggage claim area, as well as 37 boarding gates and 37 check-in desks. As the only one in Europe, Stuttgart Airport offers an airport restaurant that has been awarded a Michelin star. Terminal 3 offers even more gastronomy and shops as Terminal 1, as well as an all-automatic baggage conveyor system, 38 check-in desks and 19 boarding gates. There is also a panorama terrace, however, a fee is charged for accessing it. The airlines TUIfly, Condor, Delta Air Lines, Air France and Air Berlin, amongst many others, operate at this terminal. In Terminal 4, there are 17 check-in desks and 22 boarding gates. This terminal is mainly used for flights to Turkey and ethnic traffic.
